Prof. dr. Botond Roska

Prof. Dr. Botond Roska, one of the founders of BrainVisionCenter, continues his research activities as a member of the Strategic Scientific and Advisory Board and the Project Management Board. He obtained his medical degree from Semmelweis University in Budapest. He pursued his PhD studies in neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley, and then as a research fellow at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School in the United States. In 2005, he joined the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel, where he leads an interdisciplinary group working in the fields of neuroscience, genetics, and physiology, with a focus on vision. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of the neural networks of the retina, thalamus, and cortex. His group was the first to apply optogenetic therapy to restore vision in blind people. During his time in Hungary, he studied mathematics and cello. To this day, he enjoys solving mathematical proofs and playing the cello whenever time allows. Prof. Dr. Botond Roska is the author of more than 83 articles and reviews published in scientific journals. He participates in the work of numerous scientific advisory and editorial boards. Since 2022, he has been an external member of the Biological Sciences Section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Dr. Botond Roska's outstanding knowledge and work have been recognized with a number of prestigious awards and honors, such as the Wolf Prize, which he will receive in 2024.
